The City Lower Sharia Court, Sokoto, has sentenced one Mansur Ahmed of the Rijiyar Dorowa area in Sokoto State to two months’ imprisonment, for verbally assaulting a policewoman, Sergeant Tija Aliyu.
The convict was said to have called the woman a prostitute. He was arraigned for assault under sections 227 and 145 of the Sharia Law of Sokoto State 2000.
Ahmed pleaded guilty to the charges before the judge, Faruk Ibrahim, who sentenced him to two months’ imprisonment with an option of paying N3,000 fine.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Lawal Garba, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the offence while the female police was carrying out her duty.
The judge, in another development, ordered that a 55-year-old man, Malami Aliyu of the Tudun Yola area of the city, be remanded in the prison custody for smoking Indian hemp.
Aliyu, who confessed to the crime before the court, was arrested by a team of policemen on patrol at the Tashar Makkah, Kofar Kware area.
