Argentina can make significant progress
toward qualifying for the World Cup – and potentially even secure their
place – when they host Peru on Thursday in a CONMEBOL qualifier, Soccernet reports.
The top four teams in the region will
compete in Russia next year, with the fifth team advancing to a playoff
against New Zealand, the champions of Oceania, for an additional spot.
Peru and Argentina each enter the game
on 24 points in the table, but Peru are currently in fourth place
because they have scored more goals.
Either team could qualify automatically
on Thursday if three conditions are met: They must win the game, Chile
must lose to visiting Ecuador and Colombia must avoid a defeat at home
against Paraguay.
Argentina, who have an 80 per cent
chance of reaching the World Cup, have failed to win their last three
qualifiers, losing at Bolivia in March and drawing Uruguay in August and
Venezuela in September.
Peru held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in
Lima just over a year ago, with Christian Cueva providing the equaliser
on an 83rd-minute penalty.
Yet they have never won a World Cup qualifier in Argentina, losing six of their eight attempts all-time.
Should Lionel Messi score for Argentina
on Thursday, he will draw level with Hernan Crespo with a team-record 19
goals in World Cup qualifiers.
